A-haunting We Will Go!
The 1940s was a decade full of Hollywood Ghost Stories, many of which were more fun than scary... and far from cheesy... featuring some of the biggest stars of the day.
This Halloween month, we're keeping it on the lighter side by highlighting six of these classics. If you can correctly match the titles with the cast members and plot points, I'd say you've done a "spooktacular" job!
1. "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941)
2. "I Married a Witch" (1942)
3. "Heaven Can Wait" (1943)
4. "Blithe Spirit" (1945)
5. "The Bishop's Wife" (1947)
6. "
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (1947)
A. Henry Van Cleve (Don Ameche) meets with Satan to discuss whether or not he's qualified to enter the underworld. Gene Tierney and Robert Coburn also star.
B. A boxer (Robert Montgomery) accidentally dies too soon, and against his wishes, is given a new body by a representative from Heaven played by Claude Rains. The film won 2 Oscars, and was nominated for 6 more.
C. A man and his second wife are haunted by the ghost of his first wife. Rex Harrison, Constance Cummings, and Kay Hammond star in this adaptation of a play by Noel Coward.
D. A 17th century witch (Veronica Lake) returns to life to torment the descendant (Fredric March) of her original persecutor.
E. A widow's seaside cottage is haunted, but in the end, she and the ghost become friends. Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison teamed up for this one.
F. Hopefully, I'm not giving too much away when I mention that this film starred Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven in sort of a ghostly love triangle centered around a fundraiser.

In this new column, we'll be digging through old issues of the
Mihmiverse Monthly and
Phantom Lake Almanac (which was the original name of this newsletter!) and presenting interesting bits and pieces from the past! After all, this newsletter has been around since the release of "
The Monster of Phantom Lake" back in 2006, so there's a
LOT to choose from!
This month, we flashback to October 2013 after writer/director Christopher R. Mihm appeared as a guest at the Edgerton Sterling North Book and Film Festival.
While spending a magnificent weekend at the Edgerton Sterling North Book and Film Festival in late September, writer/director Christopher R. Mihm and the first lady of the Mihmiverse, Stephanie Mihm, snapped the following pair of photos we feel are worth publishing for all to see!
The photo on the left is a cell phone capture of an electronic billboard featuring Mr. Mihm located in Janesville, WI. Upon randomly seeing this billboard, Mrs. Mihm had an immediate excited reaction while, this being the first time ever, her husband was more or less dumbfounded to see his "mug" on a billboard!
The second photo is of a sign that was found hanging in a hallway at the actual event. The featured speaker at the festival was Dr. Patch Adams, a physician and social activist who was immortalized in the semi-biographical film, "
Patch Adams" (1998), starring Robin Williams. Though Mr. Mihm's "star" is nowhere near as bright as Dr. Adams', it was still a huge thrill for the man-behind-the-Mihmiverse to see his name next to someone as impressive and storied!
CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958)
Directed by
Gene Fowler, Jr.Starring
Tom Tryon and
Gloria Talbott
After an oddly emotionless first year of marriage, a small-town housewife (played beautifully by the too-talented-for-this-genre Gloria Talbott) begins to grow suspicious of her unusually distant husband. Of course, space aliens from a dying world are involved, taking over the bodies of the town's men for the purposes of repopulating their species. Never feeling tired or overly clichéd, this little gem of a film borrows heavily from other great 1950's sci-fi films like the original "
Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "
Invaders from Mars!" The special effects are surprisingly innovative and effective...as long as you overlook the part where the aliens' true form is revealed. I don't want to give too much away, but it left me inexplicably wanting fruit-salad-infused Jell-O. All things considered, a worthy surprise from the golden age of creature features!

Most of the films of the Mihmiverse are available on Amazon Video. Sadly, as Amazon continues to revise and rewrite its policies, they have downgraded the entire Mihmiverse catalog from "available with Prime" to rental only. Though this wasn't entirely unexpectedgiven the way the service has been slowly ridding itself of the films of Christopher R. Mihmwe
CANNOT guarantee they will still be there on any given day! So, if Amazon is your preferred place to watch the Mihmiverse, enjoy it while it lasts!
NOTE: Amazon has barred writer/director Christopher R. Mihm (and
MANY other independent filmmakers) from adding any new films to their service. As far as we have been able to figure out, the service is taking a more "curated" approach to its catalog and, unfortunately, does not have any more room for the cheesy goodness of the Mihmiverse! Therefore, if you're interested in watching the newest films of the Mihmiverse, we highly recommend checking out the Mihmiverse Roku channel,
Drive-in Monsters!
