The Best of the Worst!
Were you aware that "
Plan 9 from Outer Space" is
NOT necessarily the worst film ever made? There are several other contenders, many of which belong to the horror and sci-fi family of moldy cheeses.
Below is a list of films that critics have called the worst... followed by some info that
MIGHT help you identify the specific cinematic stench in the air. Match them up correctly, then pat yourself on the back, and go take a shower.
1. "Robot Monster" (1953)
2. "Fire Maidens from Outer Space" (1956)
3. "The Creeping Terror" (1964)
4. "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies" (1964)
5. "
Monster A-Go-Go" (1964)
A. This film was originally titled "Terror at Halfday," but was abandoned. Someone else bought the rights for spare change and finished it under a new title with different actors playing most of the same roleswhich confused everyone.
B. A small town in California is terrorized by what appears to be a length of shag carpeting draped over several actors.
C. The title character seems to be a man in a gorilla suit wearing what looks like a diving helmet sprouting TV antennae, which actually won an award for the "Most Ridiculous Monster in Screen History."
D. This stinker features scantily clad alien girls with British accents, striking embarrassed poses against cardboard sets. At one point, a car drives by in the background. On Jupiter.
E. Three friends visit a carnival and run into a group of occultists and disfigured monsters. This film was billed as the first "monster musical."
In this column, we'll be digging through old issues of the
Mihmiverse Monthly and
Phantom Lake Almanac (which was the original name of this newsletter!) and presenting interesting bits and pieces from the past! After all, this newsletter has been around since the release of "
The Monster of Phantom Lake" back in 2006, so there's a
LOT to choose from!
This month, we flashback to August 2017 for a column called
Meet the New Faces of the Mihmiverse! At the time, the production crew was hard at work filming "
Demon with the Atomic Brain," and given that the film's major cast members were all new to the 'verse, it seemed fitting to introduce each of them to the fans.
The subject of that month's interview was Michelle Makie. In addition to appearing in "
Demon with the Atomic Brain," Ms. Makie was cast in the aborted 2020 Mihmiverse film, "
That Which Lurks in the Dark." Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic shut that production down and, during the
Phantom Lake Kids era, she moved out of state and, sadly, out of reach of the Mihmiverse!
In the interest of expanding the reach of the Mihmiverse, writer/director Christopher R. Mihm has cast a handful of actors new to most Mihmivites in his next film, "
Demon with the Atomic Brain." To introduce these fine folks to the fans, we'll be including a short interview with a different person each month leading up to the release of the film!
This month, we talk to Michelle Makie who will be performing the role of one of the wives of Iordanoglou!
Introduce yourself to the Mihmiverse!
Hello, Mihmiverse! My name is Michelle and I primarily work as a theatre artist in the Twin Cities, but I have recently dabbled in the film world and am enjoying it immensely! On the theatre side, I act, stage manage, design props, direct, or anything else thrown at me.
I was born in Omaha, NE but my folks moved to MN shortly after and I have stayed there ever since. In 2008, I got my Bachelors in Theatre from St. Cloud State, and promptly moved to St. Paul where I met my husband Jordan. Together Jordan and I have a fixer-upper house, a fat diabetic cat named Biggie, and a stubborn adorable English Bulldog named Mavis. I will also take in the occasional foster dog when I'm between shows.
Tell us about your experience auditioning for "Demon with the Atomic Brain." In your opinion, how did the shoot go?
I auditioned primarily because 1: I saw the call for actors posting and 2: My friend Catherine (Hansen) had been in a couple of previous Mihmiverse Films. I saw a screening of her work and it looked like so much fun! I love films where you can tell the cast/crew is having fun; it really shows in the cast's chemistry and dynamics, so I jumped at the chance to join! I think filming went greatI had a blast, but if I could change anything, I wish the self-conscious part of me would shut up. Being around so many talented folks I get flubby, then more flubby, then I snowball into a flubby mess of flubby flub. Although I think I hide my self-consciousness well on set when I'm not spewing lines wrong...right?
What excites you most about being in "
Demon with the Atomic Brain?"
What makes you most nervous?
I can answer both questions with one answer: seeing the end results on screen. I'm really excited to see the film; I think it'll be truly great. I get nervous about seeing myself though. Did I blow it completely and my part is cut? Do I have a prominent double chin in black & white? Will my voice sound weirder than normal? Will my mom hate it?
Any parting thoughts?
Please don't cut me from the film!
EDITORIAL NOTE: Michelle Makie's part was not cut from "Demon with the Atomic Brain" and, at least according to writer/director Christopher R. Mihm, she did NOT "blow it completely" nor have a prominent double chin in black & white, and her voice did not sound weird. We are unaware whether or not her mom hated the film and/or her performance.
CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
The Horror of Party Beach (1964)
Directed by
Del TenneyStarring
John Scott and
Alice Lyon
A garbage scow dumps a 55-gallon drum of radioactive waste into the Atlantic and, upon hitting the ocean floor, it starts to leak onto a human skull. The noxious liquid fuses with the remains and inexplicably reanimates it into a googly-eyed monster with fins and a mouth full of hot-dog-esque "appendages." The creature emerges from the water and attacks and kills a woman who, just moments before, had dumped her boyfriend (to "live a little") and took part in a swingin' beach dance party featuring live music from the groovin' rock group
The Del-Aires. The woman's not-really-grieving ex immediately takes up with another girl and helps a scientist try to uncover the rampaging beast's weaknesses. Fear and paranoia spread as the monster multiplies and gruesome deaths pile up! Can the unlikable lead and his new girlfriend find a way to stop the creature before it's too late? Does it even matter? This film is so bad and ineptly made that it borders on genius or madnessbut most likely it's a combination of both! It honestly has to be seen to be believed! Whatever you think it might be, it's far, far worse in the
BEST way possible! For as "terrible" as it is, it's eminently entertaining in a way few so-bad-they're-good films are. Highly recommended for true connoisseurs of B-movie cheese!
