THE WANDERING CREATURE (AND OTHER TALES)!

Principal photography of the titular segment of the next Mihmiverse movie, "The Wandering Creature (and Other Tales)" began—and wrapped up—last month! This means that the four main stories that make up the anthology, "The Hand That Wouldn't Die," "Gnome!," "Panic at the Hot Dog Festival," and "The Wandering Creature," are all "in the can!"

The still below comes from the "The Wandering Creature" segment. In this exclusive image, we see an as-yet-unnamed character (played by Mihmiverse newcomer Joe Widmer) examining a morel mushroom. Given the fact that he appears to be wearing the same flannel shirt worn by the morel-mushroom-headed monster pictured on the temporary movie poster, we can only speculate that something bad is bound to eventually happen to this guy!

Writer/director Christopher R. Mihm has informed us that a pair of expository "bookend" scenes have yet to go before camaras, but there are no plans to film those until the busy "Halloween screening season" is over! We're told that, unlike most of "The Wandering Creature (and Other Tales)," these scenes take place inside, thus making it possible to shoot them at any time of the year!

Contributor credits for "The Wandering Creature (and Other Tales)" are still available! Making an anthology movie has presented a number of unique and unexpected challenges, and the production needs all the monetary help it can get to make sure it lives up to its potential!

The Wandering Creature (and Other Tales)
In the next great Mihmiverse film, writer/director Christopher R. Mihm takes a stab (pun intended) at an anthology movie in the vein of "Twilight Zone: The Movie," "Trilogy of Terror," and "Creepshow," albeit in his signature retro-B-movie style! In a series of linked, short tales-of-horror, an unmanned spacecraft returning from the asteroid Vesta breaks-up upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere and scatters sample containers across Phantom Lake County! Not-so-unexpectedly (particularly for a Mihmiverse movie), contact with the mysterious, otherworldly contents of these canisters create a whole host of terrifying creatures like mushroom monsters, killer garden gnomes, and more! Can the local population survive such shocking encounters, or will this be the end of all life in Phantom Lake County!?

The Mihmiverse is only made possible by contributions from fans like you. As the project soldiers onward through the filming stage, now is definitely the time when the Mihmiverse needs contributions the most!

For each $25.00 donation, all contributors will be entitled to having a single name of their choosing listed in the contributors section of the closing credits of the film, and a customized, frame-able document certifying their contribution! Credits can even be given as gifts! Imagine the looks on the faces of your loved ones when they find out their names will be immortalized on the silver screen!

A single credit is defined as the name of one (1) person or corporate entity. Any credit requiring the word "and," an ampersand (&), and/or a comma (except when part of a legal company name) will constitute multiple credits and MUST BE paid for separately. Contributors have NO SAY in the decisions or actions taken by anyone involved in the actual production of the film and are NOT entitled to ANY possible future profits earned by the film, derivative works, and/or merchandise created for or featuring elements from the film. Becoming an contributor does not entitle the participant to ANY ownership WHATSOEVER of the finished film or associated elements.

NOTE: Physical media copies of the finished film are NOT included with contributions. If you would like to receive DVDs and/or Blu-Rays of the film when it is released, you MUST pre-order them separately. We reserve the right to refuse any credit we deem inappropriate. All refused credits will be refunded.

"THREE BAD GIRLS WHO FIND A GUN AND BECOME VAMPIRES!"

Though we're all getting really excited about the NEXT Mihmiverse film, don't forget about the latest one, "Three Bad Girls Who Find a Gun and Become Vampires!" Since its world premiere in March, the film has garnered LOTS of positive praise! Audiences across the world have found it thrilling! (They were thrilled!) If you haven't seen it, you're missing out on one of the most fun Mihmiverse movies to date. The film is currently available to own and/or rent, both on physical media and digitally.

In writer/director Christopher R. Mihm's ode to "teensploitation" films of the 1950s and the cinematic oeuvre of the Coen Brothers, three female juvenile delinquents obtain a firearm and, just for the thrill of it, start robbing the fine folks of New Berlin. Unfortunately, their crime spree takes an unexpected turn after they mug and nearly murder the gambling-addicted pastor of the local church—who turns out to be an immortal, blood-sucking creature of the night! Hijinks ensue when the vampiric padre hires a pair of hitmen to help him retrieve his stolen cash and seek revenge against the three bad girls responsible!

Both DVDs and Blu-Rays of the film contain a high quality digital transfer of the film and several exclusive special features, including a blooper reel, photo galleries, feature-length commentary with writer/director Christopher R. Mihm, English subtitles, and more!

Feature Run Time: 1 hour, 16 minutes. Black & White, Widescreen, NOT RATED.

$9.99 (DVD) / $14.99 (Blu-Ray)
format:

Don't forget that in addition to being able to purchase the newly-released Mihmiverse film, "Three Bad Girls Who Find a Gun and Become Vampires," on DVD and Blu-Ray, it's also available to watch (and own) on both Vimeo and Patreon!

In fact, the entire Mihmiverse catalog is available digitally for rent and/or own at the Mihmiverse's Video On-Demand portal at Vimeo and through the Mihmiverse Patreon! THE TRIVIA CORNER
Halloween Playlist!

Outside of the Mihmiverse, I've spent a good portion of my life in the radio business. For the past six years I've been writing a Facebook blog called "Great Songs of the 70s and 80s," and for the past year and a half, I've been producing an on-air edition of my blog on WISM, 98.1 in Eau Claire, WI. It occured to me that a quiz about spooky songs would be perfect for music-loving Mihmivites like you.

What you see below is a list of songs, artists and years... and a list of lyric bits from each song. The TRICK is to match everything up. The TREAT is that you'll get some music ideas for your Halloween Party. Note: I've purposely left out any songs released after 1978, so there are no Thrillers or Ghostbusters for you! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

SONGS:
1. Witchcraft by Frank Sinatra (1957)
2. Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley (1958)
3. Monster Mash by Bobby (Boris) Pickett (1963)

5. Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968)
6. Superstition by Stevie Wonder (1972)
7. Time Warp (Cast of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show") (1975)
8. Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon (1978)

BLAST FROM THE PAST
In this column, we'll be digging through old issues of the Mihmiverse Monthly and Phantom Lake Almanac (which was the original name of this newsletter!) and presenting interesting bits and pieces from the past! After all, this newsletter has been around since the release of "The Monster of Phantom Lake" back in 2006, so there's a LOT to choose from!

This month we flash back to the Current News section of the old Phantom Lake Almanac during the month "Cave Women on Mars" debuted: May 2008!

This past month's big world premiere of "Cave Women on Mars" was a roaring success—even selling out the night! The film was extremely well received and writer/director Christopher R. Mihm and fellow producer (and Professor/Director/Captain Jackson himself) Josh Craig were swamped with people, questions and autograph requests at the merchandise booth. DVDs, posters and MARS-1 patches sold quickly and furiously while the entire cast and crew of the film schmoozed with moviegoers. An amazing custom cake was served (see photos below), and many stuck around for the exclusive "on-screen trivia/text commentary/sing-along" version of "The Monster of Phantom Lake." It certainly was one of the most exciting and entertaining events since last year's premiere of "It Came From Another World!" (which will be screening in Minneapolis at the Parkway Theatre as part of the Homegrown Cinema Series)!

Photos, left to right: the marquee at the Heights Theatre, the cast and crew after the show including (from left to right) Josh Craig (Captain/Director Jackson), costumer Brittany Hughes, Brooke Lemke (Eina), Rachel Grubb (Hagra), Elizabeth Kaiser (Acolyte), Michael Kaiser (Ojjo/Martian Slave), Emma Danbury (Eema), writer/director Christopher R. Mihm, Dan Sjerven (Lt. Elliott), Emily Fradenburgh (Gorga), Alana Bloom (Orla) and Stephanie Mihm (The High Priestess), the cake.

If you were unable to make it to the premiere of "Cave Women on Mars," the producers have set up several opportunities to catch the film in different venues—including two screenings May 16 and 17 at the Woodbury 10 Theatre (in Woodbury, Minnesota) and in the best possible place to see any Christopher R. Mihm film: at the drive-in! The film will be showing as the third feature over the Memorial Day weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Hi-way 18 Outdoor Theater in Jefferson, Wisconsin. The film was also recently accepted to the 2008 ShockerFest International Film Festival in Modesto, California. As always, as soon as more screenings and events are added, you'll find out in this newsletter.

In other news, pre-production has begun on the next film, "Attack of the Killer Robot!" Even though it was previously reported that the next film would be "Escape From Planet X," writer/director Christopher R. Mihm and fellow producer Josh Craig decided the story of a rampaging robot hunting unsuspecting humans on a lunar base in the not-too-distant future year of 1973 was just too exciting to pass up! "Escape From Planet X" has been shelved for now but hopefully, it will eventually see the light of day. Stay tuned to the Almanac for further updates on "Attack of the Killer Robot" as we get them!

EDITORIAL NOTE: Sadly, the Hi-way 18 Outdoor Theatre closed its doors permanently at the end of the 2024 season.

Four Mihmiverse films screened at the Shockerfest International Film Festival (which ceased operations after its 12th year in 2013) and won several awards, including "Honorable Mention" in the Best Science Fiction Feature category for "Cave Women on Mars." "It Came From Another World!" took home the full prize for Best Science Fiction Feature on 2007 and "Terror from Beneath the Earth" won in 2009. "The Monster of Phantom Lake" was awarded the Director's Choice award in 2006.

Neither script for "Escape from Planet X" or "Attack of the Killer Robot" was ever completed, though elements of each were incorporated into "Destination: Outer Space" and "Attack of the Moon Zombies," respectively!
CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966)
Directed by Alan Rafkin
Starring Don Knotts, Joan Staley and Dick Sargent

Don Knotts stars in this classic comedy as Luther Heggs, a lovable scaredy-cat who works as a typesetter for a small town newspaper. He dreams of one day becoming a big-time reporter and, after being prodded by the paper's janitor to write a story about a local murder-suicide which took place many years prior in a now-presumed haunted house, he slyly slips the article into the paper. The story proves popular with the local citizenry and to boost paper sales, Luther is tapped to spend a night in the old mansion...on the 20th anniversary of the original crime, no less. As he settles in for the night, the house seemingly comes alive with ghostly happenings. The next morning, he writes a story about his otherworldly experiences and he quickly becomes a minor celebrity. Unfortunately, the man who inherited the house isn't particularly happy with the publicity and sues Luther and the newspaper for libel. What follows is a fun, goofy and wholesomely entertaining story about a man in over his head who may or may not have experienced what he thought! "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" can be enjoyed by everyone and is a great movie for both this time of year, and for kids of all ages! The humor is playfully innocent and several running gags are quite funny. Don Knotts was a skilled physical comedian, and this film is a perfect example of it. Highly recommended!
