50 Years A go...
For some reason, watching the recent "
Saturday Night Live" 50th Anniversary Special made me wonder what sort of cheesy horror and sci-fi movies premiered back in 1975.
Of course, there were classics like "
Jaws" and "
The Rocky Horror Picture Show," but below you'll find films that are decidedly "less classic." If you can match the titles to the
details, you're a true connoisseur of vintage 1975 cheese.
FILMS:
1. "The Devil's Rain"
2. "Race with the Devil"
3. "Shivers"
4. "Bug"
5. "
Mary Mary, Bloody Mary"
DETAILS:
A. In a small Mexican town, a vampire goes on a killing spree. John Carradine co-stars.
B. The final film of William Castle, who co-wrote the script with Thomas Page. It's all about a scientist, played by Bradford Dillman, and his creepy obsession with entomology.
C. David Cronenberg wrote and directed this Canadian/American film, with the tag line: "Beyond the power of Priest or Science to exorcise."
D. Peter Fonda and Loretta Swit lead the cast in a story about two couples who are pursued by a Satanic cult after accidentally witnessing a human sacrifice in rural Texas.
E. In colonial New England, the Preston family betrays a Satanic priest, resulting in a curse that lasts for generations. The all-star cast includes William Shatner, Tom Skerritt, Ernest Borgnine, Eddie Albert, Ida Lupino, Keenan Wynn, and John Travolta in his very first role!

In this column, we'll be digging through old issues of the
Mihmiverse Monthly and
Phantom Lake Almanac (which was the original name of this newsletter!) and presenting interesting bits and pieces from the past! After all, this newsletter has been around since the release of "
The Monster of Phantom Lake" back in 2006, so there's a
LOT to choose from!
This month, we go all the way back to August of 2008 when writer/director Christopher R. Mihm announced which film he was going to make after "
Cave Women on Mars." As you'll see, however, this was not the first idea made public!
CURRENT NEWS
As some of our more loyal readers may have noticed, the plan for writer/director Christopher R. Mihm's next film has been in flux since the release of "
Cave Women on Mars."
Originally, it was announced that the next film would be "
Attack of the Killer Robot." But, after spending many nights working on the script, Mr. Mihm realized that his vision as written would have cost far too much to produce. Not wanting to compromise on his aforementioned vision, he decided instead to delve into "plan B," the previously announced sci-fi epic, "
Escape From Planet X." The film was on track until it came to light that actor Josh Craig, who was to play the main character in the film, was unavailable to film until, at the earliest, next summer. As such, it put Mr. Mihm into a quandary. Not wanting to let an entire year slip without making another film (wouldn't want to disappoint the fans), he thought long and hard about what to do. Finally, he had an epiphany; it was time to return to the tried-and-true fun and excitement of the "creature feature." Thus, "
Terror from Beneath the Earth" (previously titled "
Beware the Cave Beast") was born.
The script for the new film was completed on July 23, 2008 with filming set to begin in the coming months. So far, the cast includes returning favorites Mike Cook (Gustav), Dan Sjerven (Lt. Elliott), Stephanie Mihm (The High Priestess), Elizabeth Kaiser (Acolyte) and Shannon McDonough (Julie Ann Saint Marie). Also, returning to his costumed roots, Michael Kaiser will star as the title creature.
As promised on the official website, here's the official synopsis for the film:
After years of underground atomic testing, one of the animals living within the Wisawa caves (a system that stretches from Phantom Lake to the Deadlands) has undergone a radical and unimaginably horrible transformation! While exploring the caves, Dr. Vincent Edwards (Mike Cook) and colleague Rosemary Bennett (Stephanie Mihm) stumble across evidence in the disappearance of local children. After reporting the find to the local sheriff, Dr. Edwards and Rosemary are tapped to lead a rescue attempt. Along with the sheriff and small-town farmer Stan Johnson (the children's father), the rescue party quickly comes to the realization that if the caves don't get them, whatever unseen terror lurking in the shadows just might!
"
Terror from Beneath the Earth" is currently slated for a target release "time horizon" of summer 2009.
EDITORIAL NOTE: Third time seems to have been the charm because, as every true Mihmivite knows, "Terror from Beneath the Earth" was released in May of 2009. The film turned out to be quite consequential to the future of the Mihmiverse because it introduced many characters (like Danny Johnson, Dr. Edwards, and Deputy Hayes) and locations (the most important being the Wisawa caves) which have, in varying degree, popped up in the numerous films which followed. "Terror from Beneath the Earth" was the first Mihmiverse movie which did not include actor Josh Craig in a major role in front or behind the camera, although he did design and build the "Sonic Amplitude Oscillate-o-tron" (the piece of technology Dr. Edwards uses to lure the bat monster out of its lair). Several elements of the "Attack of the Killer Robot" script ended up, with slight alterations, in the 2011 film, "Attack of the Moon Zombies."
CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
The Flaming Teen-Age (1956)
Directed by
Irvin YeaworthStarring
Noel Reyburn and
Ethel Barrett
It's a tale as old as time. A young man from a small town gets bored working at a candy shop, starts to drink, gamble, and hang out with loose women. From there, he discovers musical theater and loses his hometown sweetheart. Soon, he's in trouble with the law and addicted to heroin. Inevitably, he's arrested and sent to prison where, while in the throes of cold-turkey heroin withdrawals, he hears the word of Jesus and becomes a new man. This film is directed by the same man who made the B-movie classic, "
The Blob," but "
The Flaming Teen-Age" is nowhere near as good. In fact, the movie is mostly terrible, but there's a strange magic in just how bad it is. The film is actually based on a real guy and was funded by his church, friends, and family... and it shows. Its budget is low and it's clear whomever wrote it had no idea
HOW to write a screenplay. Instead of being an engaging story, it feels like a series of five-minute episodes in the main character's life which serve only to ploddingly explain how he got from one point to the next. There's little to no real tension, the title makes no sense, and it's impossible to tell if the main actor is supposed to be playing someone in their late-teens, early-twenties, or mid-forties. Regardless, for as big of a mess as the movie is, it's weirdly entertaining, but not because it's a
GOOD movie. It's entertaining specifically because it's
NOT, but I cannot honestly recommend it to anyone but the most hardcore fan of "so bad they're good" films. If that description fits you, you should definitely check it out!
Lastly, it should be noted that this movie served as one of the inspirations for the newest Mihmiverse movie, "
Three Bad Girls Who Find a Gun and Become Vampires," which I promise is far more fun than "
The Flaming Teen-Age!"
