CURRENT NEWS
Last month turned out to be a BIG ONE for the Mihmiverse!

Just over a week into February, writer/director Christopher R. Mihm was able to nail down Mark Haider (General Castle) to film his scenes in the next film, "The Wad: The True Story Behind the Phantom Lake County Chewing Gum Disaster." After a few hours of shooting (and laughing and chatting), principal photography of the new movie was officially complete!

AND, most exciting of all, it seems getting those scenes with Mr. Haider "in the can" (which is movie-jargon for "filmed") was the last puzzle piece needed, because it allowed Mr. Mihm to finish his initial "rough draft" edit of the film in less than two weeks! Given the nature of this movie being a faux-documentary, Mr. Mihm has made it pretty clear that the editing process was far less grueling than it has been for his past features. Given that a chunk of this new film involves "sit-down interviews," there are only so many options for effectively editing the footage before things start to get very messy!

In honor of this momentous occasion, Mr. Mihm sent us this very weird behind-the-scenes photo from the making of "The Wad." What exactly a pile of hot dogs (in a bun!) has to do with the movie is still a big mystery. Still, the fact that this was the image Mr. Mihm chose to share with us this month implies it is somehow important to the overall story. Happily, now that the movie is effectively done, it won't be very long before we get to see exactly how important!

Next steps in the post-production process involve several rounds of tweaking the movie to fix any pacing, visual, or audio issues, color correcting (this one's in color!), and eventually cutting a trailer.

With this first edit complete, it means that, barring anything absolutely catastrophic, the film WILL be released this year! It ALSO means that if you have not already contributed to the film and gotten your name in the credits, you are now running out of time to do so! Remember, just because the production has reached this stage, it doesn't mean there aren't a bunch of big expenses looming on the horizon, like the cost of physical media duplication, printing, postage, and the world premiere! In fact, this is one of the most critical times during the creation of a film when funding is needed most!

If you'd like to see your name in the end credits of this next great Mihmiverse film, please contribute below! Every little bit helps to keep this movie universe we all love alive!

In writer/director Christopher R. Mihm's first faux-documentary, KPHL Channel 6 Nightly News anchor Daniel Johnson (Elliott Mihm) hosts a "look back" at one of the most shocking events ever to transpire in Mihmiverse history. Through interviews with survivors and major players involved in the crisis, re-enactments, and never-before-seen archival footage, Mr. Johnson presents the complete and unabridged story of the wad of chewing gum that mutated, became sentient, grew to gargantuan proportions, and threatened the lives of every man, woman, and child in Phantom Lake County!

Don't forget! The Mihmiverse is only made possible by contributor credits, and we need all the help we can get! For each $20.00 donation, all contributors will be entitled to having a single name* of their choosing listed in the contributors section of the closing credits of the film and a customized, frame-able document certifying their contribution!

IMPORTANT! Physical media copies of the finished film are NOT automatically included with a basic contribution. If you would like to be guaranteed a DVD or Blu-Ray of the film when it is released, you MUST order it separately (with the purchase of at least one credit)!

Credits can even be given as gifts! Imagine the looks on the faces of your loved ones when they find out their names will be immortalized on the silver screen!

THE TRIVIA CORNER
O Professor! My Professor!

This month, we salute actor Russell Johnson, (1924-2014), forever known as Professor Roy Hinkley on "Gilligan's Island."

Mr. Johnson appeared in more than 170 films & TV shows during his long and varied career, including a number of deliciously cheesy sci-fi movies in the 1950s.

Below is a list of 6 films, but here's the catch: he was only featured in 4 of them. If you can figure out the 2 that are "Johnson-free" without looking it up, perhaps you can also figure out how to fix a hole in a boat!

1. "The Thing from Another World" (1951)
2. "It Came from Outer Space" (1953)
3. "Killers from Space" (1954)
4. "This Island Earth" (1955)
5. "Attack of the Crab Monsters" (1957)
6. "The Space Children" (1958)

BLAST FROM THE PAST
In this new column, we'll be digging through old issues of the Mihmiverse Monthly and Phantom Lake Almanac (the original name of this newsletter!) and presenting interesting bits and pieces from the past! After all, this newsletter has been around since the release of "The Monster of Phantom Lake" back in 2006, so there's a LOT to choose from!

"The Giant Spider" premiered at the end of May 2013 and quickly became a fan-favorite. Around the same time, the Mihmiverse Monthly included a column similar to this one called Mihmiverse Memories, which featured stories about the Mihmiverse told by people associated with the films (actors, behind-the-scenes technicians, etc.) or regular folks talking about their experiences with the films of Christopher R. Mihm. In June of 2013, the Mihmiverse Memories column consisted of a write-up by a long-time fan named Diane Perrault who traveled over 2000 miles from Modesto, CA with her son, Mike Plows, to attend the premiere in Minneapolis the month prior.

After supporting writer/director Christopher R. Mihm's movies for so many years (since "The Monster of Phantom Lake!"), I anxiously await the box in the mail that holds my copy of each new movie. I have joyously watched each film in the comfort of my own home on my little TV screen, which is nice: no noisy people, no chatter, no one spilling popcorn in my lap—just calm and quiet. The only time I saw a Mihmiverse movie in a theater was a screening of "The Monster of Phantom Lake" at a film festival—which is where I became hooked on these movies!

This year, I finally got to experience the premiere of Mr. Mihm's latest film, "The Giant Spider," in person! To get on a plane and fly across the country to meet my favorite filmmaker... I barely have the words. Writer, producer, director (and much more) Christopher R. Mihm was so much fun and made my son and me feel very special. Everyone we met who was involved in making "The Giant Spider" was so kind, gracious and fun! We even experienced being a part of the Mihmiverse Bonfire Podcast (with an unexpected visit from a TV news reporter, no less).

How does my sweet, little at-home movie watching experience compare with going across the country to The Heights Theater and attend a Mihmiverse premiere? It doesn't! It's a totally different universe—the Mihmiverse!

Excited fans lined up in all manner of dress long before the movie started. While waiting outside, we were "entertained" by a pair of "The Giant Spider" cast members (which was a nice tease of what we would see in the movie). Excitement was just screaming from all over and then... we got to enter the theater. Surrounded by Mihmiverse actors, I excitedly snapped pictures. I placed bids for the silent auction and came away with a signed movie script!

The in-theater experience was incredible. Once again, to be with an audience is amazing, hearing them immediately singing along with the theme song. We laughed together, yelled when appropriate and just had too much fun! After the show, we mingled in the lobby, enjoyed a tasty cupcake decorated with a spider and bought movies, posters, and all kinds of goodies related to "The Giant Spider." THEN, we were able to get all of our swag autographed!

In the end, I had more fun and was treated to so much more than I could have possibly expected. If you live far away, I encourage you, if you can, to come to one of these movie premieres in person. I even managed to attend TWO screenings while I was there! It's obvious the wonderful Mihmiverse crew absolutely love what they do and the audience is devoted to these movies. Writer/director Christopher R. Mihm is incredible and everyone involved is real and down-to-earth. Attending the world premiere of "The Giant Spider" was the coolest experience I have ever had! I hope to do it again!
CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
The Alligator People (1959)
Directed by Roy Del Ruth
Starring Beverly Garland, Bruce Bennett and Lon Chaney Jr.

In a plot that comes straight out of "Spider-man" comics, a scientist looking to create a serum that will magically allow people to regrow severed limbs taps into the regenerative power of the alligator. You can probably fill in the rest of the plot yourself, but in case you can't, rest assured someone gets exposed to this questionable science and slowly turns into the creature the film is named after. Who wouldn't be excited to see a film with such an easily-understood classic B-movie plot? "The Alligator People" is an entertaining film with a truly scary AND ridiculous monster. But, the entertaining part doesn't really begin until two-thirds in. The film moves at a snail's pace in the beginning and, if you're not used to bad 1950s pacing, it will seem almost painful to modern sensibilities. Aside from that, the film is competently made and is a great example of 1950s-drive-in cinema! It's hard to recommend "The Alligator People" outright, simply because it is extremely slow in the beginning. However, I believe that if you fight through it until the monster shows up, the film becomes an instant so-bad-it's-good classic that any B-movie film aficionado will love—and the ending is both pointless AND priceless!

STREAM THE MIHMIVERSE
If you're like most people these days, you tend to stream your favorite TV shows and movies, particularly because it's way more convenient and you have access to them in more places! Did you know there are now several places to stream the entire Mihmiverse catalog?

From the movie that started it all, "The Monster of Phantom Lake," to its musical offshoot, "The Monster of Phantom Lake: The Musical!," and the most recent release, "Annihilate All Humans!," everything you need to "visit" the denizens of Phantom Lake County is available for your streaming pleasure!

The ENTIRE filmography of writer/director Christopher R. Mihm (including "Annihilate All Humans!") is available through the Mihmiverse Vimeo VOD portal!

Every film is presented using the same ultra high-quality renders used for the official Blu-Ray releases and actually feeds video content to the Drive-in Monsters Roku channel. Most importantly, the Mihmiverse Vimeo VOD portal is the ONLY PLACE to legally own the films digitally!

Retro-style monster movies from the wild & weird imagination of cult filmmaker Christopher R. Mihm! From giant, rampaging spiders to alien invasions and bug-eyed horrors, the Drive-in Monsters channel includes the entire catalog of Mr. Mihm's films, exclusive extras, and long lost special features originally released on currently out-of-print physical media! Explore the worldwide underground cult phenomenon known as the "Mihmiverse" and enjoy the rebirth of the golden age of "drive-in cinema" with the Drive-in Monsters channel!

As of right now, the channel is free... but that, most likely, will not last forever! So make sure to enjoy the Drive-in Monsters Roku channel while it's still completely free of charge!

Most of the films of the Mihmiverse are available on Amazon Video. Sadly, as Amazon continues to revise and rewrite its policies, they have downgraded the entire Mihmiverse catalog from "available with Prime" to rental only. Though this wasn't entirely unexpected—given the way the service has been slowly ridding itself of the films of Christopher R. Mihm—we CANNOT guarantee they will still be there on any given day! So, if Amazon is your preferred place to watch the Mihmiverse, enjoy it while it lasts!

NOTE: Amazon has barred writer/director Christopher R. Mihm (and MANY other independent filmmakers) from adding any new films to their service. As far as we have been able to figure out, the service is taking a more "curated" approach to its catalog and, unfortunately, does not have any more room for the cheesy goodness of the Mihmiverse! Therefore, if you're interested in watching the newest films of the Mihmiverse, we highly recommend checking out the Mihmiverse Roku channel, Drive-in Monsters!
