CURRENT NEWS
The Mihmiverse is back in full swing as principal photography of the next Mihmiverse movie, "The Wandering Creature (and Other Tales)," has OFFICIALLY begun!

As can be seen in the photo above, actors Elliott Mihm & Michael Kaiser were on hand to shoot a scene from one of the film's segments. Subtitled "The Hand That Wouldn't Die," this particular story centers around a pair of characters last seen in "Three Bad Girls Who Find a Gun and Become Vampires." Exactly HOW and why they show up is not being revealed at this time (especially given the events of the film in which they previously appeared), but you can be assured that finding out will be worth the wait when the movie is released next year!

In the meantime, don't forget that contributor credits are available! Making an anthology movie is proving to be a unique and somewhat expensive prospect and, therefore, the production needs all the monetary help it can get! Plus, what true Mihmivite WOULDN'T want to see their name in the end credits of a Mihmiverse movie?!

The Wandering Creature (and Other Tales)
In the next great Mihmiverse film, writer/director Christopher R. Mihm takes a stab (pun intended) at an anthology movie in the vein of "Twilight Zone: The Movie," "Trilogy of Terror," and "Creepshow," albeit in his signature retro-B-movie style! In a series of linked, short tales-of-horror, an unmanned spacecraft returning from the asteroid Vesta breaks-up upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere and scatters sample containers across Phantom Lake County! Not-so-unexpectedly (particularly for a Mihmiverse movie), contact with the mysterious, otherworldly contents of these canisters create a whole host of terrifying creatures like mushroom monsters, killer garden gnomes, and more! Can the local population survive such shocking encounters, or will this be the end of all life in Phantom Lake County!?

As has been reiterated year-after-year, the Mihmiverse is only made possible by contributions from fans like you. And, as this new project enters the production stage, now is the time when the Mihmiverse needs contributions the most!

For each $25.00 donation, all contributors will be entitled to having a single name of their choosing listed in the contributors section of the closing credits of the film, and a customized, frame-able document certifying their contribution! Credits can even be given as gifts! Imagine the looks on the faces of your loved ones when they find out their names will be immortalized on the silver screen!

A single credit is defined as the name of one (1) person or corporate entity. Any credit requiring the word "and," an ampersand (&), and/or a comma (except when part of a legal company name) will constitute multiple credits and MUST BE paid for separately. Contributors have NO SAY in the decisions or actions taken by anyone involved in the actual production of the film and are NOT entitled to ANY possible future profits earned by the film, derivative works, and/or merchandise created for or featuring elements from the film. Becoming an contributor does not entitle the participant to ANY ownership WHATSOEVER of the finished film or associated elements.

NOTE: Physical media copies of the finished film are NOT included with contributions. If you would like to receive DVDs and/or Blu-Rays of the film when it is released, you MUST pre-order them separately. We reserve the right to refuse any credit we deem inappropriate. All refused credits will be refunded.

"THREE BAD GIRLS WHO FIND A GUN AND BECOME VAMPIRES!"

It's hard to believe it's already been two months since the release of the latest Mihmiverse film, "Three Bad Girls Who Find a Gun and Become Vampires!" Since its debut, the film has garnered a ton of positive praise and thrilled audiences across the globe! If you haven't seen it, you're missing out on one of the most fun Mihmiverse movies to date. The film is currently available to own and/or rent, both on physical media and digitally.

In writer/director Christopher R. Mihm's ode to "teensploitation" films of the 1950s and the cinematic oeuvre of the Coen Brothers, three female juvenile delinquents obtain a firearm and, just for the thrill of it, start robbing the fine folks of New Berlin. Unfortunately, their crime spree takes an unexpected turn after they mug and nearly murder the gambling-addicted pastor of the local church—who turns out to be an immortal, blood-sucking creature of the night! Hijinks ensue when the vampiric padre hires a pair of hitmen to help him retrieve his stolen cash and seek revenge against the three bad girls responsible!

Both DVDs and Blu-Rays of the film contain a high quality digital transfer of the film and several exclusive special features, including a blooper reel, photo galleries, feature-length commentary with writer/director Christopher R. Mihm, English subtitles, and more!

Feature Run Time: 1 hour, 16 minutes. Black & White, Widescreen, NOT RATED.

$9.99 (DVD) / $14.99 (Blu-Ray)
format:

BLAST FROM THE PAST
In this column, we'll be digging through old issues of the Mihmiverse Monthly and Phantom Lake Almanac (which was the original name of this newsletter!) and presenting interesting bits and pieces from the past! After all, this newsletter has been around since the release of "The Monster of Phantom Lake" back in 2006, so there's a LOT to choose from!

For a portion of 2018, the first lady of the Mihmiverse, Stephanie Mihm, authored a monthly feature called Retro Roadtrippin' that chronicled her travels across the upper Midwest in search of small town single-screen movie theaters and nostalgic roadside attractions! The following column originally appeared in September 2018.

This month's journey takes us 61 miles Northwest of the Twin Cities to the quaint small town of Milaca, Minnesota.

Before visiting the town's single screen theater (known simply as the Milaca Theatre), we explored the town and were pleasantly surprised to find several fire hydrants painted as popular modern characters! I did a little online digging into the hyrdants and it seems that when they were slated to be repainted in 2014, the local VFW wanted to decorate five of them to pay tribute to the five branches of the military. Loving the idea, the town decided to get the community involved and asked for ideas to paint the other 30 found throughout town!

It being a beautiful day when we visited, we moseyed on over to the local park where the kids enjoyed some retro playground equipment and Elliott Mihm (Danny Johnson himself!) quenched his thirst at an old-school drinking fountain shaped like a lion's head! A little more online research revealed that lion's head drinking fountains first started appearing mostly around playgrounds in the 1960s. Though rare these days, they can still be found in random places throughout the Midwest.

As hunger eventually overtook us, we made our way to Daddio's Drive-in Restaurant. Located across the street from the park, we gobbled up some yummy home-cooked burgers and french fries! We finished our meal with homemade chocolate chip cookies and "The Giant Spider"-sized rice krispie treats for dessert.

Overall, Daddio's had a retro "small town family restaurant" atmosphere and, when we were there, we found it clean and the staff friendly.

The single-screen Milaca Theatre was built in 1950 and purposely designed to have a rustic, wood-covered exterior. Falling into disrepair, the theatre was eventually sold at auction in 2009. The new owner at that time cleaned it up and painted murals around the outside of the building. Upon reopening, the theatre showed second run movies at a low price.

The theatre's current owners bought the place in 2015 as an investment for one of their sons and is now open Fridays through Tuesdays. In addition to showing a recent movie for only $5 per ticket, concessions are also VERY affordable—so much so, you could have a movie date (with popcorn!) for less than $20!

Completely by chance, the night we visited happened to be the one year anniversary of their ownership. They were even giving out free cookies!

The Milaca Theatre was very clean and everything was well kept. We spoke to the owners and found them very kind and exceedingly friendly. Though the movie we saw wasn't very good ("The Emoji Movie"), the entire family had a wonderful time! AND, as we piled into the car to head back home, we noticed a Statue of Liberty replica on the grounds of the Milaca City Hall! Truly worth the roadside adventure!

Keep on road tripping!

CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
Target Earth (1954)
Directed by Sherman A. Rose
Starring Richard Denning and Kathleen Crowley

Based on the short novel "The Deadly City" by Paul W. Fairman.

After a failed sleeping-pill-suicide attempt, Nora (played by the beautiful Kathleen Crowley) awakens to find the city seemingly completely deserted. While wandering the empty streets, she she runs into Frank (Richard Denning) and, finding him trustworthy, the two band together to survive. The pair run into random people (including a psychotic killer) and eventually discover that the entire city has been overrun by a vast robot army from Venus. The film works as equal parts paranoid-character piece and low-budget, period science fiction. It's blatantly obvious that the production only had enough money to construct one very cool looking robot costume, but it's used well and often to dramatic effect. The film clips along at a brisk pace and includes some genuine intentional laughs. A great example of paranoid, classic sci-fi. Highly recommended!
