CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
Gorgo (1961)
Directed by Eugène Lourié
Starring Bill Travers and William Sylvester

It's a story as old as time (or at least as old as the "Godzilla" series): a volcano erupts, a gigantic prehistoric lizard-like monster (the title creature) is awakened from its slumber, and is unleashed upon the populace of an unsuspecting city (London). Landmarks are destroyed (Tower Bridge and Big Ben), people flee in terror, the army is called in, oversized-monster-mayhem ensues and a band of likeable heroes try to save the day by whatever means available. What the story lacks in originality, it makes up for in fun, incorporating familiar elements of other "gargantuan creature" films (particularly "King Kong"). The film even includes a twist concerning the "age" of the creature, but you won't necessarily see it coming if you avoid spoilers entirely. The British-made film is pure cheese through-and-through and is all the better for it, with a great monster design and wonderful special effects. If you're even remotely a fan of the "Godzilla" series (or '50s/'60s era B-movies in general) and have never seen "Gorgo," it's a surprisingly "good/bad" time! Yes, the film is clearly an imitator—but it's a good one worth checking out! AND, a little-known fact: "Gorgo" spawned a comic-book series in the early 1960s that lasted 23 issues and is now worth a decent amount!

THE TRIVIA CORNER
...And I Quote...

The history of classic (and cheesy) horror films is filled with famous quotes. I have chosen 5 to test your knowledge. Your mission: Match the quote in the first list with the movie in the second list. Good luck!

1: "Help me! Help meeee...."
2: "Do you have to open graves to find girls to fall in love with?"
3: "It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!"
4: "Love means never having to say you're ugly."
5: "We medicals have a better way than that. When we dislike a friend of ours, we dissect him."

A: (1931) "Frankenstein"
B: (1932) "The Mummy"
C: (1945) "The Body Snatcher"
D: (1958) "The Fly"
E: (1971) "The Abominable Dr. Phibes"

IMPORTANT MOMENTS IN SCIENCE with DR. BOB TESLA
We have a very important Moment in Science this month. It's the moment that started the "Space Race" and it paved the way for much of our modern life. I'm talking, of course, about the launch of Sputnik!

On October 4th, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched the first artificial satellite: Sputnik 1. This small (less than two feet across) shiny sphere sent shock waves across the world. Before that point, the Soviets had been considered a "backward" and "technologically inferior" society. With this launch (and the failure of the American attempts to catch up), the "Space Race" was on! We won't get too deep into the history of all that—it's a topic for another time and we know how that race ended. I want to keep our focus on the little satellite that could. During its launch, several errors occurred that almost scrapped the mission; one problem with the rocket engine came within ONE second of destroying the whole thing! Sputnik made it into low Earth orbit, however, and stayed there for 3 months, 1440 orbits, signaling everyone below with a steady beeping.

What makes this one launch so important if we're not talking about the greater history? Well, just by floating up there, scientists got the ideas for satellite communications; using a satellite to relay signals from one side of the world to the other, near-instantaneously, instead of being stuck with line-of-sight relays! If you've seen Independence Day, you should know the scene where David Levinson explains satellites to President Whitmore and that's pretty accurate. Sputnik also directly led to the GPS systems that your mobile phone and navigation programs use to get you to your destination! Within days of its launch, William Guier and George Weiffenbach of Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory realized that they could use the Doppler shift of Sputnik's radio signal to locate a receiver on Earth! From that idea, they were able to make the Transit program of satellites. From 1960 to 1991, these satellites were used to give positioning data the US military, particularly the Navy. It wasn't until the GPS satellites went online in 1990 (using many of the same concepts) that Transit became obsolete.

So there you are. Every time you watch a television show from the other side of the world in real time or get to your destination with the help of your GPS app, you need to thank that little beeping Soviet satellite. Well, thank Sputnik and SCIENCE!
Join us on October 14th at the Gateway Film Center in Columbus, OH to see "The Neon Dead!"
