MEET THE NEW FACES OF THE MIHMIVERSE!
In the interest of expanding the reach of the Mihmiverse, for his next film, "
Demon with the Atomic Brain," writer/director Christopher R. Mihm has cast a handful of actors new to most Mihmivites. To introduce these fine folks to the fans, we'll be including a short interview with a different person each month leading up to the release of the film!
This month, we talk to the film's lead, Mandy Tietz. Mandy is not
ENTIRELY new to the 'verse, but this will be her first role in the "official timeline" of the films! (It should be noted, the photo appearing in this interview was taken directly from the new film!)
Introduce yourself to the Mihmiverse!
Hi, I'm Mandy. I grew up in the small town of Eleva, WI. Growing up, I was always the creative kid that enjoyed choir, dance and theater. At 16, armed with a driver's license and all the freedoms that allowed, I decided to audition for my first show at the Eau Claire Children's Theatre. From that point on I was hooked!
I went on to study theater and mass communications, receiving a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. After college, I took a day job with United Healthcare and started my family: my husband, Ryan, and 3 kids: Logan (13) and Peyton and Paige (10).
I continued to do community and semi-professional theater and was cast in a diverse number of roles. In recent years, I've also done some commercial work for Hulu and as an extra in larger budget productions. I feel I am really lucky to be able to balance my love for theater, work and family!
Of all the new actors appearing in "
Demon with the Atomic Brain,"
you have the biggest connection to the Mihmiverse. Tell us all about that!
A few years ago, I was thrilled to be asked to be part of the musical adaptation of "
The Monster of Phantom Lake." This was my true introduction to the Mihmiverse. Last summer, we premiered "
The Monster of Phantom Lake: The Musical!," and I was honored to play the role of Stephanie Yates. What a tremendous experience!
What most excites you most about being in "
Demon with the Atomic Brain?"
What makes you most nervous?
When writer/director Christopher R. Mihm approached me about being in his next movie, I was thrilled! My background has been almost exclusively on the stage, so I think what is most exciting is learning the process and expanding my experience. I think I will probably be most nervous when I see the finished film for the first time. It will be surreal, I'm sure!
Any parting thoughts?
If nothing else, never put an expiration date on your dreams. If I had, I'd never have had many of the amazing opportunities and experiences I've hadand I wouldn't be nearly as happy!
While you wait for Mandy's big Mihmiverse-movie-debut, you can see her singing, dancing and acting her heart out on the "
The Monster of Phantom Lake: The Musical!" performance DVD, available Monster Day 2017 (March 9th)! Pre-order your copy

CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
Beyond the Time Barrier (1960)
Directed by
Edgar G. UlmerStarring
Robert Clarke,
Darlene Tompkins and
Vladimir Sokoloff
A test-pilot flies an experimental sub-orbital aircraft and, upon landing, finds himself in the far-off future of the year 2024. The world he knew is gone, seemingly abandoned and in a state of complete decay. While scouting around, he is set upon by the inhabitants of a strange futuristic city, knocked unconscious, and captured. When he awakens, he is surprised to find the remnants of the now-dying human race living in a strange dystopian society. Most of the population has been mutated into brutal, deformed creatures by a cosmic plague,Can and the remaining few unaffected people rule with an iron fist. He also encounters other "time-travelers" who arrived in this bizarre future by similar "wormhole events." Using his wits and derring-do, our hero must find a way to escape and return to his own time before the violent mutants overthrow the delicate balance! "
Beyond the Time Barrier" is quite a decent 1950s science fiction film. In fact, one of the best things that can be said about it is that it feels very much like a prototypical episode of the original "
Star Trek" series. Though it definitely comes off as a low-budget production, the story and overall tone of the film is so strong, it overcomes any and all limitations. All things considered, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the film and would recommend it to any fan of classic sci-fi!

A Round O' Rondo Trivia!
With "
Weresquito: Nazi Hunter" nominated for a
Rondo Award, it's time we saluted the legendary actor who made these awards necessary...uhh...
POSSIBLE: Rondo Hatton!
1. Rondo Hatton played the same character (albeit with different origins) in 3 different movies: "
The Pearl of Death" (1944), "
House of Horrors" (1946) and "
The Brute Man" (1946). Name the character.
2. Although Rondo did
NOT play the hunchback in the 1939 version of "
The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (He played the "Ugly Man"), he
DID play a hunchback in this 1943 musical comedy starring Judy Canova and Dennis Day. Name it, if you can.
3. (1943) In the third and final film about Paula Dupree-The Ape Woman, Rondo Hatton played "Morlock the Brute." Name the film!
4. In this 1946 film starring Gale Sondegaard, a young girl goes to work as a live-in caretaker for a spooky old woman. Little does she know that every night, the woman drains a bit of her blood to feed her strange plant. It almost sounds like "
Little Shop of Horrors," but it's not. Rondo Hatton played "Mario-The Monster Man." Name the film.
5. Rondo's odd appearance was partially the result of his exposure to poison gas while fighting in WWI. He developed a disease of the pituitary gland that caused a progressive deformity of the bones in his head, hands, and feet, as well as his internal and external soft tissues. Name the medical term for his disfigurement.

IMPORTANT MOMENTS IN SCIENCE with DR. BOB TESLA
This month's important moment in science happened 40 years ago. On March 4th, 1977, computer science history was made with the delivery of the Cray-1A supercomputer!
Seymour Cray had worked for years on the "supercomputers" made by Control Data Corporation until he left and started Cray Research. Having dealt with the flaws of earlier systems, he designed a true supercomputer for its time. It used cutting edge technology like integrated circuits (printed circuit boards that you find in modern computers) and a Freon cooling system. It was designed as a 7 foot tall cylinder to minimize signal delay in the wires which made it look very odd compared to the rows of computer banks of the old computers. It was a 64-bit system over its 60-bit competitors and had a memory of approximately 2 gigabytes. It was able to perform an average of 160,000,000 floating point operations per second (160 MFLOPS) which was blazing fast for its time! It was roughly 6 times faster than the previous supercomputers! To put it in a more modern context, the Nintendo GameCube could perform 1.9 GIGAFLOPS (almost 12 times faster than the Cray-1A) while a Samsung Galaxy S6 would be about 217 times faster!
Of course, these numbers are a little misleading since the Cray was designed to optimize its processing power and not trying to let you make calls, texts and play Candy Crush. These computers were so revolutionary that there was huge demand for them. Cray had expected to only sell about a dozen of them. They were priced at $8.86 million in 1977 dollars which works out to almost $35
BILLION in 2017 dollars. Cray ended up selling 80 of the Cray-1A models! The Cray supercomputers also required their own electrical substations to supply them with the power they needed which could add an additional $35,000 per month to the cost!
It may seem dated now but it provided an important milestone for, not just computer science, but many scientific fields. The power this computer gave organizations enabled them to make groundbreaking strides in high energy particle physics, climate science, cryptography and much more. For many years, the name "Cray" was synonymous with supercomputers in the same way Xerox became the default for copiers. Eventually, other companies would take over the spotlight but modern scientific research owes a huge debt to this digital pioneer. Without the Cray-1A, we would be decades behind in
