YOU, the fans! Every month, we choose a random Mihmivite and ask them a few Mihmiverse-related questions in an attempt to get to know them better and find out what they
REALLY think about the films of Christopher R. Mihm!
This month, we interview Mike Reardon!
Introduce yourself to the Mihmiverse!
When and how did you discover the films of Christopher R. Mihm?
When I started "
Deadheaddaddy's Creepy Things" in 2016, I contacted every independent horror film company I could find to acquire films to review. Writer/director Christopher R. Mihm was one of the few who actually got back with me! I've been a fan ever since!
If you had to pick just ONE, which of the Mihmiverse films would be your favorite?
My favorite sub-genre of horror is supernatural type films, so "
House of Ghosts" is definitely my favorite.
Tell us how you, in particular, show your "Mihmiverse pride!"
Other than watching and supporting the films, I try to share news about the Mihmiverse on my Facebook page as often as possible. I'm also planning an episode of
Deadheaddaddy's Creepy Things devoted to these fun movies.
Where would you like to see the Mihmiverse go in the future?
I'd love to see the Mihmiverse's take on a kaiju film and definitely would like to see some of the monsters do a crossover film like Universal did back in the day!
Want to be interviewed for a future edition of the
Mihmiverse Fan Focus? Send an email to
info@sainteuphoria.com and let us know! Maybe next month the subject will be
YOU!
HOLIDAY MOVIE OF THE MONTH
Writer/director Christopher R. Mihm has described his 2015 film, "
Danny Johnson Saves The World," as a "stealth Christmas movie" in the same way that a film like "
Die Hard" is often referred to (though clearly in
VERY different ways). This month, instead of the normal
Classic Movie of the Month, we've decided to highlight the only film Mr. Mihm has made that is
TRULY meant to be viewed during the holiday season.
AND, instead of relying on Mr. Mihm to review his own film (which, let's be honest, isn't entirely fair), we've provided a few of the more positive reviews from Amazon.
Don't forget! "
Danny Johnson Saves The World" is available for free to all Amazon Prime members!

"Looks like one of those old, weird classic monster-sci-fi-robot kiddie movies from yesteryear, and is so much fun, action-packed, and funnyall at the same time. Kids would enjoy this movie, but it's also made with an adult audience in mind. (Works on more than one level.) Lots of fun, just like all of Christopher Mihm's movies are!"
R. Dunn
"Retro all ages Sci-Fi for kids and adults. Great homage to the B-movies of yesteryear."
Ralph Roullard
"This is a tough film to review because it has something for everyone. Young kids will love it because the heroes are kids, there are spaceships, robots, aliens and puppets. Parents will love it because it's totally kid-friendly and there are hilarious bits that the kids might not understand, but will have you in stitches (e.g. the younger sister trying to find just the right stick to use to whack the attacking alien). There's even a little bit of '
The Princess Bride' in the grandfather relating the story to the kids. Although he does lose track of which story he's telling sometimes and does a little creative re-writing of the story as he tells it. Great fun."

Mike Cook
Hello! I guess writer/director Christopher R. Mihm didn't hate my column last month, so I have been asked to write another one. This month, I would like to talk about a Mihmiverse favorite: "
The Giant Spider." No discussion about this film would be complete without discussing the long history of giant insect movies from the Golden Era of Sci-Fi and Horror.
 | "Them!" (1954) |
|
Let's start with one of my personal favorites, the giant ant epic, "
Them!" Made in 1954, "
Them!" is a true classic of 1950s horror. Atomic testing in the New Mexico desert leads to giant mutated ants which threaten to eat all of humankind. A great cast, including James Arness, James Whitmore and Edmund Gwenn, attempt to save the world from the real stars of the film, the giant special effect bugs. Released in June of 1954, it beat "
Godzilla" to be the first "atomic" giant monster movie by four months. The film still holds up pretty well and I recommend it highly.
"
Them!" was very successful and started a trend of giant insect movies. Notable among these are the giant grasshoppers of director Bert I. Gordon's "
The Beginning of the End," the giant Willis O'Brien stop-motion scorpions of "
The Black Scorpion," and the giant praying mantis of "
The Deadly Mantis." Most of these films are "nothing to write home about," but they do make for a fun watch. It's interesting to note that in almost all these movies, radiation from an atomic blast is the cause of the creatures' mutations. Mihmiverse fans should be well aware of the dangers of atomic radiation!
BUT, out of all of the atomic-radiation-created giant bugs, one creature reigns supreme: The mutated spider! Giant spiders have graced the silver screen more than any other killer bug.
After "
Tarantula" made its debut in 1955, giant spider movies just kept coming. "
Earth vs The Spider" (another Bert I. Gordon film, also known as "
The Spider"), "
The Incredible Shrinking Man," "
The Kingdom of the Spider" starring William Shatner, and "
The Giant Spider Invasion." Even "
Harry Potter" and "
The Lord of the Rings" featured giant spiders. There is something special about spiders that can make your skin crawl, and a
GIANT SPIDER that much more so!
That brings us to the Mihmiverse classic, "
The Giant Spider." Made in 2013, the film has the look and feel of the best of the giant bug movies. The true star of the film, of course, is the Mihm family's pet tarantula, Tarantulos. Mr. Mihm truly outdoes himself with special effects that look as good or better than any of the "golden era" giant bug moviesand Tarantulos puts in a great performance!
There are lots of great Mihmiverse regulars on screen, too. Daniel R. Sjerven is our undaunted hero, Howard Johnson, willing to risk it all to save the world. The lovely Shannon McDonough plays his fiancée, Zita. It is always a pleasure to see Shannon, as she may be the Mihmiverse's greatest "Scream Queen." Mike Cook and James Norgard play the beloved Drs. Edwards and Gabriel (respectively) and are joined by Billie Jo Konze as Dr. Victoria Hackett. These three noble scientists battle Mark Haider's "you-love-to-hate-him" General Castle. Most of the talented Mihm family make appearances in the movie and director himself has a memorable role as the owner of a drive-in theater. Michael Kaiser returns as Deputy Hayes and it is notable that this is a rare instance where Mr. Kaiser
DOES NOT play a monster.
"
The Giant Spider" is a perfect tribute to the films Mr. Mihm loved in his youth. If you have any love for the giant bug movies of the past, you owe it to yourself to check out "
The Giant Spider," and don't forget that you can find a copy at
SaintEuphoria.com! Tell 'em Michael sent you. You'll be glad you did!
