Last year, we began a NEW tradition with the lovingly dubbed "The Night Before The Thing," the first-ever pre-premiere party. The event was a rousing success, so we've decided to hold another one! AND, since "Danny Johnson Saves The World" is designed specifically to appeal to the kid in all of us, we figured nothing was more appropriate than to throw a pizza party!

The evening will begin with a dinner of pizza (naturally) and soda (or water) and continue with other fun, super-secret activities! Writer/director Christopher R. Mihm, the first lady of the Mihmiverse, Stephanie Mihm, and several members of the cast and crew will be in attendance and, like last year, there exists the distinct possibility attendees may see (and rub elbows with) other "famous Mihmiverse faces!"

This event is limited to ONLY 40 people and, once it's sold out, due to the size of the venue, no one else will legally be allowed in—so DO NOT HESITATE and grab your tickets RIGHT NOW! ALSO, just like last year, for an additional $15 (+$3 for sizes over extra large) those who are interested can pre-order a T-shirt designed exclusively for—and only EVER available at—this event! NOTE: You MUST pre-order a T-shirt to receive one. They will be made on-demand only for those who pre-order. T-shirts will be handed out at the event, and extra T-shirts will NOT be available.

The Night Before The Thing Part II: Pre-Premiere Pizza Party will be held at the LivINN Fridley located at 5201 Central Avenue Northeast in Fridley, MN.

PLUS, each episode will include something unique you can't find anywhere else!

Lobby cards are a form of movie advertising that were quite common from the early days of film, up through the B-movie-rich 1950s and '60s. Usually issued in sets of eight, each card featured a different scene from the film. These days, full sets of lobby cards are highly sought after by collectors.

After releasing lobby card sets for "The Giant Spider," "Attack of the Moon Zombies" and "The Late Night Double Feature," a new set for the movie that started the Mihmiverse, "The Monster of Phantom Lake," is now available—BUT IT IS ALMOST COMPLETELY SOLD OUT!

Designed by Mr. Mihm himself, this set of eight 8.5" x 11" lobby cards depicts scenes from the film and are hand-colorized and stylistically "weathered" to look extra retro! Order now before they're gone, because once they're sold out, they may never be available EVER AGAIN!

$19.99 per set (FREE shipping & handling, even international!)

War of the Worlds (1953)
Directed by Byron Haskin
Starring Ann Robinson and Gene Barry

Probably the best known adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi story, 1953's "War of the Worlds" can confidently be held up as a perfect example of what makes "Atomic Age" sci-fi cinema so great. For those few who are unaware, the plot is as straightforward as it gets: after a series of meteors crash to Earth, Martian spaceships appear and start destroying everything in their path using white-hot death rays. A pair of scientists race against the clock to find some way to defeat the alien horde, but ultimately, the solution is far simpler than they ever imagined! If you really don't know how the story ends, I refuse to spoil it. Everything about this Academy Award-winning film is superb. The acting, direction, mood, cinematography, beautiful Technicolor presentation, and especially the special effects are as good as they get in a 1950s-era genre film. Sure, if you look closely you can see the strings, but with a movie this exciting (even, surprisingly, by today's standards), you will not care! If you've never seen this retro special effects extravaganza, you need to see it RIGHT NOW!
— Christopher R. Mihm

The Mechanics of Sci-Fi

Mr. Mihm has let it be known that in his latest film, "Danny Johnson Saves the World," one of the main characters is a robot. With that in mind, this month's trivia deals with robots made famous in classic 1950s science fiction films.

1. (1951) This one is easy. A flying saucer lands in Washington with a special message for Earth. Things do not go well. Michael Rennie plays Klaatu, and Lock Martin plays his robot. Name the film and the robot.

2. (1953) In this black and white 3-D film, Ro-Man the robot destroys almost everyone on Earth. Eight survivors remain. Ro-Man's mission to finish them off runs into trouble when he falls in love with one of the survivors. Name the film.

3. (1956) Another easy one. Leslie Nielsen stars in this classic film about starship C57D and what happens when it lands on the planet Altair IV. Name the film and the famous robot who made his first appearance in this film.

4. (1957) Ten-year-old Timmie only wants a playmate. After he is mysteriously invested with superior intelligence, he reassembles a robot that his father and other scientists had been ready to discard as junk. The robot makes Timmie invisible and sinister motives are revealed. Name the film and the robot.

5. (1957) A flying saucer ejects a robot that seems to be absorbing all of Earth's energy—even atomic bombs cannot stop it. In fact, the robot only gets larger after every attack. Luckily, scientists figure out a way to stop the menace before it destroys Los Angeles. The name of the robot (and the title of the film) is also the mythological name for the father of Zeus. What is it?

It's finally Spring and a fresh salad with a lot of fresh, crisp, delicious ingredients is definitely a must-have to greet the season! That's EXACTLY the recipe I have for you this month!

Easter Grass Slaw

  • 6 cups coleslaw mix
  • 2 large carrots, shredded
  • 1 medium sweet yellow pepper, chopped
  • 1 large apple, chopped
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
In a large bowl, combine the first six ingredients. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour over the cabbage mixture and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate until serving.

Yield: 8 servings

This crunchy salad is always a tremendous hit with my family. We give it 5 out of 5 "rampaging dinosaurs." I suggest serving it with your Easter ham or a juicy fresh-off-the-grill cheeseburger or Uncle John's Burger Dog!

ENJOY!

You can find this recipe (and many more like it) and its corresponding nutrition information on the Taste of Home website!
